What happened

Iran’s IRGC Navy, via Iranian state media, claimed that tankers exploded and caught fire after striking naval mines while using what Tehran calls an unauthorised southern route through the Strait of Hormuz, and that the vessels were abandoned. Reported counts differ: Reuters, via AsiaOne, and The National relay a claim of four tankers that caught fire and exploded between 30 and 31 October, while AP-sourced reporting carried by Gulf News cites three. Reuters reports the IRGC said one tanker carrying more than 2 million barrels hit a mine; this cargo figure is part of the claim, not a verified spill. Reuters and AP could not verify the claim, and no vessel names, flags, crew casualties or pollution have been established. Separate UKMTO reports of projectile and explosive-device strikes (Warnings 186 and 187, and the Al Mayeda strike south of Lavan Island), and the Omani evacuation of RITI off Musandam, are not matched to these claimed vessels. Claims of large oil losses are media framing, not a verified spill volume. The marker is a broad regional reference.

When cited sources give different casualty, damage or spill figures for this event, they’re reported side by side above rather than merged into one number. See how confidence levels work.
