What happened

During and after Turkey's failed 15-16 July 2016 coup attempt, Turkish authorities initially denied access to Incirlik Air Base and closed the surrounding airspace for hours; Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook confirmed 'air operations at Incirlik Air Base have been halted.' A power outage hit the base, which hosts US tactical nuclear weapons and served as a hub for the US-led coalition's air campaign against ISIS; US Air Forces Europe said backup generators could sustain operations indefinitely, and US Central Command adjusted counter-ISIS flight operations so aircraft could return but not launch new sorties. The State Department advised Americans to avoid the base and the security threat level was later raised to 'delta.' On 18 July, Turkish authorities arrested Gen. Bekir Ercan Van, the base's commander, along with roughly ten other soldiers and police, over alleged coup involvement. The reviewed reporting (Air Force Times; Middle East Eye) found no casualties reported at the base itself.
