What happened

Three militants stormed Istanbul's Atatürk Airport on 28 June 2016, opening fire on civilians with automatic weapons before detonating suicide vests, killing 45 people and injuring 163 others; all three attackers died in the attack. Two were identified as Vadim Osmanav and Rakhim Bulgarov, both reportedly linked to Russia's North Caucasus and Central Asia; the third attacker's identity was not established in the reviewed reporting. Turkish authorities blamed the Islamic State, though the group never formally claimed responsibility. In November 2018, an Istanbul court convicted six defendants on premeditated-homicide and constitutional charges, sentencing them to life imprisonment, while six others received prison terms of six to twelve years for terror-group membership; 26 defendants were acquitted and four remained at large. This was one of the deadliest attacks on an airport globally in the period covered by this site.
