What happened
The Syrian army and allied militias repelled a mass Islamic State assault on the T4 (Tiyas) airbase west of Palmyra on 17 December 2016, five days after ISIS had recaptured the city of Palmyra itself. State media said the attackers approached the base from the southwest, coming within about two miles before retreating under a Syrian counterattack; the base continued to receive mortar and rocket fire in the following days. This is a distinct, earlier episode at the same airbase from the confirmed 9 April 2018 Israeli strike on T4 recorded separately on this site. The reviewed reporting did not provide casualty figures for this specific assault.
When cited sources give different casualty, damage or spill figures for this event, they’re reported side by side above rather than merged into one number. See how confidence levels work.
