What happened

A predawn strike on the T4 (Tiyas) airbase near Palmyra in Syria's Homs Governorate killed at least 14 people, including Iranian nationals, on 9 April 2018, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Russia and Syria blamed Israel, with the Russian Defense Ministry saying two Israeli F-15s fired eight missiles from Lebanese airspace at around 4 a.m. and that five were intercepted; Syrian officials said all eight were shot down. The Israeli military did not comment on the allegations. Israel had previously said the base hosted Iranian and Quds Force drone operations, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the strike 'a very dangerous development.' The attack came amid heightened tensions following a suspected chemical-weapons attack in Douma days earlier and threats of a US-French response.
