What happened

A fire broke out at PetroChina's Dalian Petrochemical Corp refinery in Liaoning province, one of China's largest, at around 18:40 local time on 17 August 2017, after a broken seal in a feed pump ignited near the plant's residual fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) unit, which has a capacity of about 1.4 million tonnes per year. More than 600 firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze by roughly 21:00 the same evening. No injuries were reported. Equipment connected to the RFCC unit was suspended following the fire, while the refinery's other processing units, including its roughly 410,000 barrel-per-day crude distillation capacity, continued to operate normally. The incident occurred approximately two months after the RFCC unit had completed a scheduled maintenance turnaround. No environmental impact or offsite consequences were reported in the sources reviewed.
