What happened

A fire broke out at storage tank T-301 in the fuel storage-tank area of Pertamina's Balongan oil refinery (Refinery Unit VI, 125,000 barrels-per-day capacity) in Indramayu, West Java, at around 00:45 local time on 29 March 2021. Four tanks within the roughly 2-hectare storage area were affected, and Pertamina began a controlled shutdown of processing units as a precaution against the fire spreading, though the blaze remained confined to the tank farm and did not reach the refinery's main processing units. Five to six local residents and passersby were injured and hospitalized, and surrounding residents were evacuated and relocated as a precaution. Pertamina said it would resume normal refinery operations once the fire was fully extinguished and conditions were deemed safe, and drew on supply from its Cilacap refinery (348,000 bpd) and the TPPI Tuban petrochemical complex to maintain regional fuel availability during the response. The precise cause was under investigation by the company and local authorities and was not established in the sources reviewed.
