What happened

Nigeria's interconnected national electricity grid experienced a persistent pattern of partial and total system collapses throughout 2016-2023, each cutting grid-supplied electricity across major cities and regions until the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and generating/distribution companies could restore the system in stages. Data compiled by Thisday from Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) industry records and reported by TheCable in August 2022 recorded 222 total and partial grid collapses nationwide between January 2010 and June 2022, with 28 occurring in 2016, 21 in 2017, 13 in 2018, 11 in 2019 and 4 in 2020. TCN separately reported, in comparing five-year periods, 85 total and partial grid disturbances (64 total collapses and 21 partial collapses) across 2015-2019, an average of roughly 17 per year, before citing improvement to 20 disturbances (14 total, 6 partial) across 2020 through May 2024. Nigerian industry and regulatory commentary generally attributes the collapses to a combination of frequency-regulation failures when generation and demand fall out of balance, an aging and underinvested transmission network, gas-supply shortfalls to gas-fired generating stations, vandalism of pipelines and towers in some years, and the structural weakness of Nigeria's grid relative to installed generation capacity.
